The Purpose of Otters Read (Grades 6–8)
Find books you enjoy and read for both fun and learning.
Build the habit of reading regularly.
Talk about books with your friends, teachers, and family.
Be recognized for the time and effort you put into reading.
Become a confident, curious life-long reader.
How It Works
Read 8 books each school year (June–May). All students can backdate to June of 2025 to count toward their goal of 8 books.
Books can be from anywhere: the school library, your classroom, home, or public library. Class novels also count if you read the whole book.
Keep track of your books using the Otters Read form and share it with your advisor.
Do 1 Book Talk each year with your homeroom teacher.
Print your Otters Read form
Bring it to your book talk
When you finish your talk, you and your teacher will sign the form
Finally, bring your completed form to Mr. Scharnberg in the library.
At the end of the year, students who complete the program will be recognized at school and awarded with a certificate and pin.
What Is a Book Talk?
A book talk is a chance to share the books you’ve read with others. It’s not a test—it’s your time to show off a story you liked (or didn’t like!) and why. Click here for detailed instructions.
You can:
Talk about your book to your homeroom group.
Have a conversation with your homeroom teacher about your book.
You’ll also make a small visual aid — like a poster, Google Slide, or drawing — to go with your talk.
Why Join?
You get to read what you want.
You’ll grow your reading skills while having fun.
You'll grow your habit of becoming a life-long reader.
You’ll earn recognition for your effort.
This is a bridge to the high school honors program!
And most importantly — you’ll discover books that can stay with you for life.
